This popular 6 week evening course introduces you to the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and how to incorporate them in your everyday life.

Our thoughts, our emotions, our behaviours and our physical reactions all interact together on a daily basis. This course using CBT will help participants understand and change negative habitual thoughts and behaviours and will introduce cognitive skills which are very beneficial in dealing with the stresses and strains of everyday life.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a self-help approach which focuses on the fact that how we feel and act in response to the challenges in our lives is largely influenced by our thinking  (how we interpret what is happening, the meaning we give to it).

For instance, if we are given feedback suggesting that a task we did could have been done better, we could interpret this either as helpful feedback,  as hostile criticism or even as indicating that we are a complete failure. There may be some good evidence on which to base any of these interpretations, but very often there isn’t, and so we feel lower, or angrier, or more anxious than we need to. We may also respond unhelpfully (withdraw, react defensively, etc), which can make the situation worse.

In some cases, this can become a self-fulfilling vicious cycle, and we get trapped in our negative thinking. In this course,  we look at developing techniques to challenge and break cycles of negative thought patterns for a more positive view of ourselves and the world. CBT can help us cope better with difficult emotions e.g. stress, anxiety, fear, anger and low mood  to live more easily and happily.
